Mad as a Hatter
Mad as a Hatter was a phrase the English used to imply that someone was crazy. This phrase originated from the 19th century when hat makers suffered from mercury poisoning when mercury was used in the process of making felt hats. Prolonged exposure to mercury had caused slurred speech, tremor, and hallucinations and hence, leading to it being called the mad hatter disease.
