COURSE OVERVIEW

Advanced Diploma

The course gives students the creative and technical knowledge and skills they need to become professionals in the multimedia design industry. It first equips students with the fundamental, broad-based skills in graphic design. Following that, students learn to transform 2D graphics into 3D by creating dynamic interfaces and integrating programming capabilities.

They are provided with the opportunity to research multimedia design trends and issues in order to produce integrated suites of digital design solutions that take into account aspects of culture, economics and social interaction.

Coventry University

This is a practice-based course which is informed by key theoretical considerations from the area discipline of digital media. It will prepare students for professional careers in the digital media sector within the media, design and communications industries. As such, it aligns well with the ethos of the School of Media and Performing Arts, preparing students to become reflective and sustainable practitioners in the field of digital media design, research, production and professional practice. It takes a transmedia or cross-media approach: enabling students to become familiar with a range of critical and creative media tools and technologies to inform their practice and understanding. It will therefore be well placed to address the rapid developments concerning the impact of new media technologies and broader changes to the media and communications landscape.

The programme will enable students to understand the scope and impact of digital technologies and practices in the context of various digital media industries from both an international and Asian perspective. It will develop their creative thinking and experimentation capabilities in order to allow them to create innovative new applications of digital media practice. Students on the course will be able to apply their creative skills in a variety of digital media including visual and text based forms of media content, digital publishing, interface and platform design, digital storytelling, web and application development, social and interactive media.

There will be opportunities for site visits within Singapore, South East Asia and beyond, and talks by visiting digital media professionals, together with live projects, a professional experience scheme and links with local, regional, national and international digital industries.

The BA blends scholarly education and professional skills training for digital media and communications professionals working in a global context. The curriculum design enables inter-disciplinary work, intercultural awareness, embedded use of technology, online learning and delivery patterns which replicate sector and industry level practice thereby meeting the University’s wider educational aims and aspirations.

Northumbria University

The overall intention of the Interactive Media Design Programme is to create an experience where notions of contemporary design practice are implicit yet existing boundaries and conventions of design are constantly challenged.

The Programme is designed to provide a specialist education to students intending to enter the design and new media industries within the context of multi-platform delivery, for example as, Information Architects, Design/Project Managers, Web Designers, Interaction Designers, Games Designers, and Experiential Designers.

The programme has a strong emphasis on the ‘design process’; importance is placed upon the development of visual, written and verbal skills necessary for effective communication in design related professions. Assignments may consist of design projects, interactive project presentations, research, reports, design documents, written assignments and critiques.

Aims:

  • To develop knowledge and understanding of relevant design studies that informs present and future design practice and theory.
  • To cultivate a critical and intellectual awareness of design that encourages the exploration, inquiry and development of its boundaries.
