India – Delivering engineering education with quality in India is a challenge to educators in the wake of the Indian Central Government’s initiative such as “Make in India” and “Digital India”. Numerous reports in the media have suggested that the quality of engineering education is dropping gradually, with some studies indicating that only 25% of engineering students are employable.

As a responsible educational institution, Raffles Greater Noida takes a collaborative approach to bring the best practices onto a single platform with the intention of benefitting all participants. A Director’s Conclave on “Outcome Based Education and Project Based Learning” was hosted on 16 July 2015 and invitees included the Vice Chancellor of Uttar Pradesh Technical University along with Directors from a range of Engineering Colleges in the region.

As Director and Dean of Raffles Greater Noida’s School of Engineering Dr. Krishna Rao welcomed the guests and initiated the discussions. Professor Stephen Rawlinson, President of Raffles Greater Noida, emphasised the importance of quality, reality-based education in engineering, and strongly promoted a collaborative approach in sharing the best practices as they are developed in individual institutions. Raffles Greater Noida was also elated to host international educator Professor Krishna Vedula, Executive Director of IUCEE and Professor and Dean Emeritus of University of Massachusetts. He provided a worldly view on ‘Outcome Based Education’ as adopted by leading institutions. Professor Bill Oakes, Director of EPICS and Purdue University, explained the importance of Project Based Learning, which emphasised on ‘doing engineering than learning engineering’.

The takeaway for the Director’s Conclave was fruitful and as a token of appreciation, Professor Mahesh Gandhi, Director General of Raffles Greater Noida presented a Vote of Thanks to the guest speakers and expressed his gratitude for the collective and mutually supporting approach demonstrated by all participants.
