Indonesia – As Raffles Medan continues to build on its reputation as one of the leading design schools in Indonesia, a collaboration with an industry partner has sowed the seeds, paving the way for future partnerships in the future.
Under the recommendation of JW Marriott, a five-star luxury hotel who was involved in a partnership with Raffles Medan, the US Consulate in Medan approached the school to conceptualise designs for the United States of America’s 239th Independence Day Celebratory event at the hotel.
Led by Creative Practitioners Ms Theodora and Ms Lori Emilie, Raffles Designers Christine Chandra, Invyonie, Alindia and Tiara Claudia put their creativity to the test and upon completion, they had the chance to present their designs to US Consulate Medan Vice Consul Mr Trevor Olson at Raffles Medan College on 27 April 2015.
Mr Olson and Mr Gerard Moutte (General Manager, JW Marriott Medan) were very impressed with the students’ design and commended that works of high quality and enhanced the atmosphere of the Independence Day Celebrations.

Christine remarked, “This is my first time designing a ballroom for a formal celebratory party. Besides gaining experience from the event, I hope the event organisers can also gain knowledge from us and we are thankful to them for giving us this opportunity!”
Tiara was also grateful for the opportunity and she commented, “It is an honour for me to be given this opportunity by the US Consulate Medan and JW Marriott Medan. The feedback given by them has helped and nurtured me to be a better designer.”
Alindia was equally excited. She said this gives her extra motivation to be a better designer and it has enriched her experience.
To sum up her experience, Invyonie said, “I am grateful to JW Marriott Medan to entrust with such a big task even though we are still developing ourselves in the designing world. It has been a wonderful experience!”
