Breaking New Grounds With Joe Spinelli

Singapore – Joe Spinelli, Principal of Raffles College of Higher Education, received an Outstanding Contribution to Fashion Education Award accolade at the Asian Couture Federation Awards Gala held at the Marina Bay Sands in November 2014. As a mentor of many students in Raffles, Joe’s remarkable achievement has once again set a higher benchmark for Raffles Fashion Designers and Creative Practitioners to follow.

The ACF Awards Gala was well-received by 400 guests including top fashion luminaries, renowned celebrities and the media. It was a splendid celebration of the creativity and craftsmanship of couture from the most elite international couturiers. Organised by FIDé Fashion Weeks, this event aimed to recognise the world’s leading individuals across a spectrum of disciplines and professions for their outstanding contribution to the fashion industry.

Raffles Fashion Designers, Daniella Grace Krestianto and Zhong Haowen who emerged as winners in the 4th Japan Creative Centre Sustainable Fashion Design Contest, were invited to showcase their award-winning collection at the event.

“It was a great honour receiving this award as it validated and recognised the things that I have done for the past 20 years. I felt a great sense of satisfaction seeing designers whom I have taught or worked with, becoming famous designers working on their own collections or working for big names, or even developing their own identities and brands. I have never envision 20 years ago that I could come this far. But looking back at it, it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. The part of my journey that fulfills me the most is the way I have touched people’s lives, and how they have remembered what I have done for them or what they have done for me after so many years later. It all boils down to the same philosophy that with hard work, you can succeed. If you are going to just sit there and not do anything about it, you will not achieve anything in life. It’s also good to dream big because when you do, you can attain what you dream of.” said Joe.

Raffles’ long-standing collaboration with Daniel Boey, award-winning Fashion Godfather, also received the Award. The ACF Lifetime Achievement Award went to a Japanese Fashion Designer, Kenzo Takada who was ACF’s Honorary President and one of the prestigious couturiers in the industry.

The Gala consisted of exciting fashion showcases and exclusive performances, featuring the most comprehensive runway presentation of couture. Carefully curated seminal and iconic pieces from each of the couturiers were also on display to illuminate the considerable workmanship and attention to detail of creating every piece. It ended with a mind-blowing performance by a Korean Superstar, Rain Jung-Ji Hoon, who received an Asian Couture Federation Style Icon Award.
