Moving Forth With Sustainable Design

SINGAPORE – Interior design enthusiasts were in for a treat as Professor Jason Pomeroy gave a design talk as part of his Design Green! initiative on 3 May 2016. An award-winning architect, master planner and academic at the forefront of the sustainable built-environment agenda, Professor Pomeroy is also the founding principal of Pomeroy Studio. His longstanding partnership with Raffles Singapore included workshops and collaborations with Raffles Interior Designers over the past few years.

Entitled “Can water provide a viable alternative to land urbanisation?”, Professor Pomeroy touched on developing sustainable communities via water in conjunction with his book release ‘POG: Pod off Grid l Explorations Into Low Energy Waterborne Communities’. Drawing contents from his book, he talked about how continued risk of widespread flooding caused by climate change can affect the lives of many who live, work and play on water. As population, urbanisation and technology advance rapidly, Professor Pomeroy highlighted the possibilities of using water as an alternative to land urbanisation. Ideas explored were self-sustaining communities on water that push towards zero-energy and built-environment case studies from all over the world were conducted by Professor Pomeroy to address the potential sustainability challenges of tomorrow.

Held at the seminar room at Raffles Education Square, the talk was attended by 80 Raffles Designers and invited guests of Pomeroy Studio.

The event also saw Raffles Interior Designer, Jurin Miranda WIJAYA, taking the stage for a photo opportunity with Professor Pomeroy and Interior Design Programme Director Louis Albert DUBE. As part of the advanced diploma’s curriculum, Jurin is currently undergoing an industrial attachment that will grant her the opportunity to construct large-scale 3D print model of ‘Pods Off-Grid’, a prototype visionary sustainable waterborne floating community. She will also assist in the curation of Pomeroy Studio’s design exhibition at Raffles Education Square that takes place from 3 to 31 May 2016. During the period of her attachment, she will be under the guidance of Senior Interior Designer, Alessandro Micelli.
