Raw To Brilliant: The Art Of Fashion

SINGAPORE – In another brilliant showing by our budding designers, Raffles Designer Laurensia SALIM has emerged as one of the top eight candidates awarded the Masterclass Award by the internationally-renowned The Arts of Fashion Foundation, which brings together emerging fashion designers from around the world in a celebration of creativity and fashion.

Praised for her exceptional creative work and vision around the theme “Translation”, Laurensia’s success was all the more remarkable, considering the high-level of international competition, with students from 33 schools and 20 countries present amongst the 50 finalists alone.

According to Laurensia, “Translation” was inspired by Jacques Derrida’s philosophy of challenging the concept of fixed structure, in fusion with Zaha Hadid’s deconstructed buildings, which has been translated into irregular plastic patchworks and 3D printed pieces.

“I am really grateful that I went to Raffles Singapore for my studies. Before Raffles, I didn’t necessarily have the skills I needed to be able to properly design and create. It was the Creative Practitioners at Raffles who provided me with the structure, critique and lessons I needed to adequately shape my ideas, all while never restricting the creative freedom I had to continue designing,” she shared.

Held for the 14th year running in the heart of San Francisco, Laurensia will soon embark on her highly-sought after Arts of Fashion Masterclass apprenticeship and scholarship in one of the fashion capitals of the world, Paris, in recognition of her tremendous creative vision and talents.
