An Insight Into The World of Fashion

HONG KONG – Fashion is highly significant in Hong Kong. It boosts one of the largest manufacturing sectors in the clothing industry and garment trading companies are experienced in quality control, clothing designs and international regulations. With such high importance, it is no surprise that a number of potentials aspire to be fashion designers.

On 17 February 2016, Raffles Hong Kong organised a Fashion Design Preview Event for a diverse audience who are passionate and keen in fashion design. Refreshments were served while footage of our own House Show in the Hong Kong Fashion Week 2015 was aired. A mini exhibition was also setup to showcase works of students. There was also a sharing session that featured Raffles Hong Kong Fashion Design alumnus Grace C.Y. LAM and Mr Stefán Orschel-Read, who is the school’s Fashion Design and Fashion Marketing Programme Director. Grace was also the winner of the “Craftsmanship Award” at Hong Kong Fashion Week 2015.

During the session, Grace shared on the process of creating a brand, ranging from researching to making individual garments and creating collections for a label. She highlighted the difficulties of designing a collection of garments, as a considerable amount of time, passion and energy would be required. Grace also discussed her upcoming new collection that will be showcased in Vancouver Fashion Week 2016.

The audience were fascinated by the way that fashion has inspired and encouraged Grace, and by the motivation that has been driving her to get involved in this fast-paced industry. The preview was an experience that saw participants understanding the importance of the fashion industry in Hong Kong.
