Knowing Your Rights

Singapore – At Raffles, students not only acquire knowledge and skills to build their foundation, they are also given ample opportunities to expand their horizon in order to become industry professionals upon graduation. In January 2015, 30 Raffles Designers from Animation and Games Design disciplines attended a seminar on Intellectual Property in Animation.

The seminar provided insights on how designers should protect their creative works in a competitive industry. David Kwok, CEO of Tiny Island Production, shared his challenges in setting up an animation studio and gave constructive advice on how to succeed as a creative professional. Raffles Designers also learned how he took the locally created stereoscopic 3D animation series “Dream Defenders” to an award-winning global status. Another guest speaker, Mark Cheng, a legal advisor from the IP Academy, explained the concept of copyright in the creative industry and how to protect and safeguard creative works from plagiarism and unauthorised use.

“This seminar was inspiring and enriching as my students were able to meet and network with industry professionals and legal counsel. In addition, they have gained relevant knowledge of Intellectual Property and discovered the challenges in setting up a creative business.” commented Federico Fiore, Raffles Creative Practitioner.
